Materials - Silver
I tend not to use Silver for the general wedding rings, engagement rings, and eternity rings unless the design is particularly robust because I consider it too soft for a life time of wear, especially if holding a precious stone in place. I do however make many of the designs in silver sometimes with harder wearing gold settings which protect the stones more effectively.
Silver also lends itself very well to the jewellery I design. I enjoy using silver particularly when it is oxidised(i.e.blackened) and combine it with different coloured pieces of gold (yellow, white, red and green). The rich colours of the gold against the blackened silver background provide strong contrasting pieces which work well with the right gemstone.
The effect is different to the all gold versions and can be understated or make a statement depending on the size of the piece.
Silver in its pure state is generally considered to be too soft for wearable jewellery and so is alloyed with copper to create hardness and therefore durability. Standard or Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure silver, alloyed with 7.5% copper.
White metal is currently very fashionable and with Silver being less expensive than Gold or Platinum this enables larger pieces of jewellery to be commissioned without the cost being too high.
