I was born and brought up in Bradford where I lived until I left for university in 1974. During my time at school I always enjoyed the drawing and making subjects like art and woodwork and initially wanted to be an architect. I eventually however went to Loughborough University and trained as a Craft and Design teacher where I gained a Bachelor of Education Hons. degree in Creative Design. Silversmithing was one of my main options within the course and following university I went into Secondary Education, where I taught Jewellery and Silversmithing as part of the Design Curriculum. It was during this initial time in teaching at Burleigh Community College in Loughborough, that I found a passion for making jewellery and some of my original designs come from this time in teaching.

In 1980 I moved to York and the following year I started making jewellery full time from my home workshop. I believed I could design and make items of jewellery that people would want. It was a simple faith but driven by passion and although I was naive from a business perspective, doors opened for me and in 1982 I established a gallery called Pyramid in Gillygate York, which having later sold as a going concern, is the origin of what is now The Pyramid Gallery in Stonegate.

Selling Pyramid helped me focus on my own work which I then sold through other retail outlets and exhibitions. In this period of time the foundations of my current work were established. My designs are born from searching for an effective composition of colour, shape, texture and light, using the qualities of the metals and stones in their various forms. I continue to seek to produce works of quality in design and craftsmanship and I pursue excellence with each piece. I believe my work shows who I am and I hope that it brings great pleasure to those who wear it.

In 1994 an opportunity arose to once again open a retail outlet in my previous premises. This time with greater experience and a more established range of my own work behind me, I chose to open a gallery under my own name. So with my wife Jane as my business partner, The Robert Feather Jewellery Gallery & Workshop was estabished. Alongside my own work, we would sell jewellery, ceramics and glass by many established craftspeople, which brought a rich choice of designs and a lively array of colours and textures to the changing display. The gallery specialised in quality contemporary jewellery and was one of only a few Northern Galleries granted selected membership of The National Association of Contemporary Craft Galleries.

In 2007 we moved our business to our home in Bubwith and now I sell my work excusively through my studio/workshop. With the increasing rise of the internet and the vision to pursue only my own work from home, it seemed the right time to estabish this move. Now my shop window is my website which shows the full range of work I currently make at any one time. I try to find time  to work on new designs which I look forward to showing at our Open House Exhibitions and the vision of working from home in this way is an attempt to offer a bespoke personal  jewellery service which I hope will be of value to people.
